DECADENT TURNIPS AU GRATIN
Ingredients
2 pounds turnips, sliced very thin on a mandoline
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 cups Jarlsberg or gruyere cheese, shredded
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, stemmed
2 cups heavy cream
¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees and generously coat a 11” x 7” or similar size baking dish with softened butter.
Layer ⅓ of the sliced turnips in an even layer, overlapping, on the bottom of the baking dish. Season with ⅓ each of the salt and pepper and top with ⅓ of the shredded cheese and ⅓ of the thyme leaves. Pour about ⅓ of the heavy cream evenly over the top.
Repeat these layers 2 more times and sprinkle the parmesan cheese over the top.
Cover the casserole tightly with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for 20-30 minutes more until the turnips are very tender when pierced with a fork and the casserole is browned on top and bubbly.Let the casserole sit for 15-20 minutes to set before cutting. Garnish with thyme sprigs.
